2024 Christmas Newsletter/Updates and Books read in 2024

I did another digital Christmas card this year and posted it to social media because I did not get around to printing/mailing, once again. Here are some of our highlights from 2024:

  • Charles graduated from high school
  • Scott and Elisa took Charles to Iceland for a Senior trip
  • Elisabeth serving a mission in Ecuador and Charles in Ghana Africa (for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints)
  • All the kids home for September and October = more family time
  • Nora and Annabelle in soccer; Scott coaching Nora's team and assistant coaching Annabelle's
  • Long weekend trip to Seattle for Elisa and Scott; Elisa got to share San Juan Islands with Scott
  • Annabelle driving
  • Jane made high school cheer team (she's currently on a break because of a concussion)
  • Lots of hiking for several of us. Scott, Elisa, Elisabeth and Charles hiked the Grand Canyon R2R (Elisa did R3). Nora and Elisabeth did Timp for their first time.
  • Scott had a work trip to Orlando and Elisa tagged along and played at Harry Potter World while he attended conferences :)
  • Elisa working with elementary kids on reading and learning English (for the ELL kids)
  • Visits from extended family
I am so grateful for our Savior Jesus Christ who is the light of the world! I have felt his light when times were dark, his love when sad and alone, and his peace when life seemed chaotic. I love this time of year and the increased light, love and joy because of Him.

2024 wasn't my greatest year for book reading. I think the past few years I read 24 or so, but this year I got through 19.  I mostly listened to books on Audible and lots 12 of them were bookclub books. I think the only books I physically read were Heart of the Matter, Better than Happy, and the Book of Mormon. I read parts of Outlive, but I mostly listened to it. I don't normally include the Book of Mormon because I read it most years, but I decided to this year since my numbers were low. The books with asterisks next to the title are my top rated,  5 star books.

1. How the Penguins Saved Veronica
2. The Body Keeps the Score
3. The Tattooist of Auschwitz (didn't finish this one because of inappropriate content, but got 2/3 through)
4. Glory Over Everything
5. Outlive
6. Salt to Sea
7. Better than Happy*
8. Ivanhoe
9. Heart of the Matter *
10. A Gentleman in Moscow
11. The Magic Strings of Frankie Presto (Scott and I listened to this one while driving around Iceland; Charles had his headphones in)
12. I Must Betray You*
13. Nothing to Envy*
14. The Healer's Apprentice
15. Grandma Gatewood's Walk
16. Dracula
17. The Guardians
18. The Book of Mormon*
19. Follow the River

Scott read 12 books this year, and he also finished the Book of Mormon again, so 13.

Christmas time is here (last 2 weeks of December)

Christmas is my favorite holiday. I love the lights, I love the decorations, the colors, the music, the gift giving, the coziness (fireplaces, low lights, soft sweaters) and all the activities around remembering the birth and life of Jesus Christ.
The week before Christmas week we were still busy with school and tests and projects. I appreciate when the kids help one another, like Annabelle here helping Jane with her math (which I couldn't figure out how to do). I helped Nora with a Diorama she needed to complete for a WW2 report. 12-year-old Nora painted my nails with gel polish. Are they so cute and festive?

Charles said it didn't feel much like Christmas in Africa (hot, no Christmas trees, no lights everywhere etc), but they had zone conference the week before and all the missionaries were given Santa hats which was nice.

Pepa's been coming to the temple each week with Scott and I (and Elisabeth when she's available) which has been fun. So far she's been to Oquirrh, Jordan river and Draper temples.

We found this South Korean food place that sells lots of yummy things like Mochi donuts, boba smoothies, popcorn chicken in different flavors with fries, dipped corndogs and tongaluhu (what nora's holding; the fruit on a stick with a hard glaze).

We ended up making another couple of batches of Chex mix to give to neighbors/friends, and another batch of white chocolate candy cane pretzels. These are my favorite things to make (and eat) this time of year. Just playing my favorite game: Splendor.

Charles lives in an apartment with 4 elders. A couple of times now they've had 4 additional elders come stay the night before a Pday so that they can play sports together on Pday beginning early. Charles has gotten some good use out of his hammock. They hang it from the bars that are on the windows.

Christmas Eve morning after a long walk/jog, I came home and did a Christmas yoga flow on Peloton. I love Peloton: their yoga classes, their strength classes(including core and pilates plus typical leg day/arm day/chest and back etc) and bootcamps and all of it; though what I use the most frequently is Yoga. I use Peloton a couple of times a week and then I also use the Kira Stokes fitness app once a week and CSE app about once a week. I also like to walk Penny daily, and then I jog a couple of times a week although lately I've had to take a break from jogging and do more speed walking on those days because of my right hip. I love being active and moving my body, I love seeing gains in strength and endurance.
Christmas Eve Scott worked the morning and came home at lunch time. I made lion house cinnamon roll dough while he was gone. We did our traditional family ice-skate at the Ice Ribbon with the Ludwigs.

We skate for an hour which is the perfect amount of time.

After skating we came home and finished up the cinnamon roll dough and put that in the fridge so it would be ready for Christmas morning. This LionHouse recipe makes 18 rolls.

Pepa, Lani and Spencer came over and watched The Greatest Christmas Pageant Ever with us on Amazon (it's still in theater but you can also buy it now, which is cheaper and in my opinion better than watching it the theater because it's cozier at home). We got Dominos Pizza for dinner and then afterwards we tried out a Christmas Candlelight service at a local church that we'd got a flyer for in the mail. It was cute; they read the Christmas story from the scriptures and had lots of music in between. We sang some of the songs too and at the end we all were given a candle (with a little circle of cardstock paper around the middle to catch the wax drips) and we lit them up and sang Silent Night. I'm not sure that we'd go to this particular one again although I liked the idea. And I liked that it was less than an hour. Maybe we'll try it at another church and see how that one is; or we might just do what we always do and that's do it on our own at home, reading the Christmas story and singing songs in between, and we have chimes for some of the songs which is fun.

Lani didn't come to the candlelight portion so once it was done I dropped Pepa and Spencer off at home and then we came back to the house and the girls exchanged their sibling gifts and then we let them open their pjs from us.

The girls all wanted to sleep down in the basement so we told them they had to be in bed by 10pm and not come up anymore so that Scott and I could get ready for Christmas morning.

Nora, Jane and Scott woke up first around 740(Scott a little earlier). They're allowed to open their stockings before the others are up so they did that.  I got up at 8 and I took the girls to take care of our neighbors dog (they took care of her for 6 days) and then by 9am we woke up the other two girls and started opening gifts. The family gift this year was 2 electric GoTrax scooters (I got them for a great deal on Black Friday). It snowed some on Christmas Day which was fun. We love our cinnamon rolls.

I got these bracelets for Scott and myself. They're the colors of the Ghana flag.
Christmas Eve and Day we worked on and finished this puzzle; we'll need to get a new one for next year as this ones missing pieces. We had enchiladas, rice, beans and guacamole for dinner along with our traditional Pandoro cake that we order on Amazon. Pepa's family joined us for our Christmas story telling and chimes.

Friday after Christmas Tayson's family came up for a visit so we could all meet since they're getting pretty serious. We sure enjoyed our time with the Hepworth family; they're all great and we loved hanging out, playing games, going to a hockey game, stopping by the new tree of life display, and eating dinners together.
I didn't get any pictures of Nora's brunch, but Saturday morning she had 8 girlfriends over for a Christmas brunch. She organized the whole thing and had girls bring different foods to share (toppings for pancakes...Nora made the pancakes), juice, donuts, etc and we also made some Rhodes Rolls Cinnamon Rolls (didn't feel like doing the homemade ones again in the same week). They did a gift exchange and hung out for a couple of hours. I'm so grateful my kids have had such good friends over the years.

New Years Eve, Nora had invited some friends over, boys and girls, and they hung out in the basement. They were playing some game with the yoga ball where someone sits on the couch and the other person is holding the yoga ball and runs into the person sitting on the couch and then they push them off. Well the guys were getting pretty into it and someone got pushed really hard into the wall and it made a HUGE hole in the wall by our projector screen. Good thing Scott is handy and knows how to repair stuff. He and Nora will be starting to fix it on New Years Day. A couple of the parents offered to help pay or fix it which was kind.

Christmas time is here (first two weeks of December)

I can hear that song playing in my head right now, "christmas time is here". That's how I feel as I'm writing this post sitting in my living room, the lights dimmed, and the Christmas tree lit glowing in the corner, red and green everywhere (Pillows, blankets, stockings hung on the fireplace mantle), the smell of pine from our candles that are burning nearby. And as I scroll through the pictures in this post it also makes it feel like Christmastime. Nora and Annabelle were able to go to SLC to music and the spoken word, one sunday morning with their youth group.

The girls decorated gingerbread houses for a youth activity one night. They turned out cute.

My sister Pepa is out here, and after we went to the temple together, Scott and I went to Devil and Angel desserts for dinner (it's south korean food; we got flavored popcorn chicken and fries), and we got Pepa a boba shake since that's one of her favorite things.
You know when Black Friday sales recently happened when my food storage area looks like this: stocked up with CSE vanilla protein powder because they're 35% off and I use this stuff daily, year round.

At school all the teachers had a snowman page on canva to decorate and write a description. Mine has Scott and the kids, plus things that represent my family/heritage/parents, and other things I love (writing, reading, exercising, penny).

Our dear, old friends the Arkell's stopped by one evening and we loved catching up with them!

Gina was my visiting teacher (ministering sister) way back in 2004 (the year Elisabeth was born). We used to walk together, pushing our strollers, all around the BYU/Wymount/temple area. I loved our walking visits.

December 10th my dad would have turned 98 years old! He passed away 9 years ago, adn sadly, Nora doesn't remember him (she was 3 when he passed away). But we do our best to help her remember him and keep his memory alive by sharing pictures and videos, and telling stories, especially on his birthday. He loved to cook (he made the best refriend beans and mexican rice), to dance, to play his mariachi music and neil diamond music on his record player, he was very clean and showered often times twice a day, and he vacuumed every day. He loved America and was so proud when he became a citizen when he was in his 70s. He choked up evvery time he heard a song about America. One of his favorite hymns was, "I believe in Christ" and he'd often call Elisabeth and ask her to play it on the piano, and she always did, so happy to please her loving and flattering grandpa.

Charles' bestie Drew (and he's like a second son) got his mission call last week to milan italy!

Elisabeth went shopping last week at the Mexican Market, Rancho Markets, and got groceries to make a couple of Ecuadorian dishes. She made a soup with steak that she didn't love the way it turned out, and then she made patecones with plantains that were yummy!

The high school decided to add in another dance this year (I guess they thought 4 (or is it 5?)wasn't enough). Johno who is a friend of Charles(and a senior), asked Annabelle. They got Taren (another friend of Charles, and Johnno) to ask Annabelle's friend so that she would know someone in the group which was nice.
I appreciated that Ananbelle used a dress Elisabeth used in High school. I love when we can reuse/recycle.

During this time of year we love making Christmas treats and delivering them to friends and neighbors. These rolo pretzels are a must. As are the white chocolate covered pretzel thins with crushed candy cane.
Scott experimented with a new recipe, a hot cocoa cookie which turned out great.

He also made poppyseed bread, which was something his mom often made over the holidays.
Muddy buddies are another usual item we make, and the kids often gift bags of these to their friends.
We don't often video call with Charles anymore because he has very limited data, so instead we just use a voice call through google chat. But he turned on his camera for a minute so he could show us the christmas lights they found at a local light store and strung up in their apartment (he lives with 3 other elders right now). He lives in Mapong and his companions name is Elder Paleli. He's been there since November 21 and is doing great and loves his companion who is Samoan but is from Australia.

getting ready for christmas, Thanksgiving in ID

The Ludwigs were kind enough to let us come over and watch the BYU v Utah Utes football game at their house. It was SO close! We ended up staying til because of how close it was, but that meant we didn't get home til around midnight. It was worth it though; it was a good game and BYU won!

Elisabeth's boyfriend Tayson came out from Pocatello to visit. They met in Ecuador while they were both serving missions there and reconnected once they were both home. My friend Kim and I exercise together on the weekends and since they wanted to do a hike, we took them on one of our favorites. Lower Falls via Bells Canyon. Since it was nearly winter, the water level was low and we needed spikes for a lot of it, but it was still fun.

Charles said that when they eat at members homes (or more correctly, when they eat outside of members homes), they often have a dish for the family to share, and a dish for the missionary companionship to share. Charles said this took some getting used to, but he's fine with it now.

Before the weather got too freezing cold, Scott got the lights up on the house.  But we still had our thanksgiving wreath up since it's that time of year.

Normally we wait until after Thanksgiving to put up our Christmas tree and decorations, but since we were going to Idaho for Thanksgiving to spend it with Becca's family, we decided to put it up the Sunday before Thanksgiving so it was up and ready for us once we got back. And I'm so glad we did. I love the way the house looks when it's lit up with the lights from our trees.

Tuesday evening before Thanksgiving we drove to Idaho. We took off around 330pm and got there around 930pm because of traffic.
Wednesday the kids played and "helped" put some lights up in the backyard. They did their best but had no idea how to do it, so Blake ended up going back and moving things around :). Scott worked for a good part of the day from their home, and Becca and I did some food prep for Thanksgiving. I made pies and cooked the sweet potatoes and got the yam dish ready. Before we got to Idaho, I also prepped some things like I cut and baked the bread I would use for the slow cooker stuffing recipe (from Mels kitchen cafe and it's so yummy; it was my first time making homemade stuffing). Scott made a carmel apple pie, Becca made a cherry pie, and I made banana cream pie.

Wednesday night we decided to go iceskating. This was not the best idea for Rain as he's too little to figure it out, so he tried for a bit and then Blake walked him around the park to look at lights while we finished up our hour skate.

Scott made his usual turkey breast covered in bacon. It looks pretty and it keeps the turkey moist.

We played lots of bananagrams and some other games too.

Jane asked if I could make texas roadhouse rolls, so I tried a copycat recipe, also from Mel's kitchen cafe. They turned out well. Jane made a honey-butter to go with it.

Friday night we went to the Scentsy Lights display. Scott's good friend from growing up and college, Kevin, met us there and then he came over afterwards and visited while we worked on a puzzle; it's always so good to see and visit with friends and family.
