BYU, Stake Conference, Joseph Smith and Mormon Church History

Last week I attended BYU education week with my mom and just prior to that, we had a stake conference where Elder Roney from the area 70, was visiting. During the youth session (Elisabeth was the pianist and Elder Roney walked up to her while she was playing prelude music before the meeting and told her he wants one of his sons to marry her). Elder Roney said he'd ran into a friend recently who'd left the church(along with his family) after reading some information on the internet about the mormon church's history and Joseph Smith. Elder Roney then shared with us 'The parable of the Hawaiin Vacation' which was basically this: There was a family that went on a vacation to Hawaii and they were having a wonderful time, enjoying the beautiful beaches, hiking etc. Then one day, dad decided to jump on the internet and research Hawaii's history and he finds out that King Kamehameha wasn't a very good king and made some big mistakes so the dad decides to leave the vacation early and takes his family with him where they finish out their vacation in North Dakota. In essence, dad ignored the blessings, 'the fruit of the tree' of Hawaii because of a founders mistakes, and takes his family away to something much lesser. Elder Roney went on to say that he later saw the friend again while at the play Hamilton. The play shows weaknesses of our founding fathers and after the play he texts his friend and says, "Well, I guess now you have to move out of the United States."

Scott and I have read many biographies, several of which were founding fathers, including George Washington and Benjamin Franklin and through reading them, we were both very aware that yes, they made some BIG mistakes and had some incorrect thinking, but at the same time they were definitely and without question, led by the hand of God. Imperfect people are all God's ever had to work with, so work with them he does!

At BYU education week this same thing came up a couple of times (I guess there's quite a few people out there struggling with the Mormon churchs imperfections, especially when it comes to previous prophets and our beginnings...failed bank, polygamy etc which we do NOT practice! You cannot if you're mormon). But when I read the scriptures, in both the Bible and the Book of Mormon, I see the same thing. Imperfect people, including prophets, trying to do their best, not always sure what that is, sometimes trying one thing, it doesn't work, we try again, and again (I'm sure Laman and Lemuel were really doubting their father who was a prophet, and Nephi when they kept trying and failing, and losing all worldly possessions and money in the process, to get the plates) doing their best to follow God, but making mistakes. That's why we're here on this earth.  We're here to gain experiences, both good and bad, so we can learn from them and hopefully progress and become more like our Savior. All I know is that EVERYTHING that is good, all joy and blessings are because of Jesus Christ and my membership in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and I would not trade that for anything. Ever.

BYU education week was uplifting and inspiring and I came away wanting to be an even better person! 6-year-old Nora, on the other hand, asked if I could 'please, never do that again, because I just missed you so much and I was at school and then I came home and you were not there and I really missed you and we need to spend time together." She is a doll. I promised her I wouldn't do it again...until next year :). I love her and miss the family as well during those 4 days, but this is 4 days of education and inspiration that helps me to improve and grow, to be a better mother, wife, human and so as long as Scott is good to have me go and is supportive at home for those days(like he was this year...so amazing! love him more than words can express!), then I'll keep showing up. Loved, loved having mom with me, even though we only went to a few of the same classes! It was fun to drive back and forth together and share with one another what we learned and what blessed us and will continue to bless us.
I went to classes on marriage, parenting, health, wealth and wisdom, church history, teaching, getting out of comfort zones, creating healthy daily habits, communication, personal revealation, discerning thoughts from the spirit and so much more! I have new uplifting and educational podcasts to listen to, recommendations for books to read, tons of scriptures and church magazine references for prophets and apostles that I will be reading over the next while! The learning just keeps on going! Love it! Here are some favorite gems of knowledge from my classes:

Parenting/Home and Family Life:
-Teens are a part of creating kindness in the home. Let them know their position on the team in creating a Christ-centered home. We should all be cheerful, helpful, considerate peacemakers who share our testimonies.
-Partcipation leads to conversion.
-Eliminate criticism in the home.
-Don't do for your children what they can do for themselves(and I would add, 'on a regular basis' because I think its good to observe and feel and offer service sometimes, but they do need to learn independence and responsiblity so for the most part, they should be taking care of themselves when possible).
-Success is not dependent on a child's choices. Was Heavenly Father a successful parent? 1/3 of His children didn't follow Him.
"There is no development of character without resistance, there is no growth of spirituality without overcoming." David O Mckay 1945
-people respond to challenges. they don't respond to begging.

Marriage: (taught by tamara fackrell, phd in marriage and is a divorce attorney)
-Positive self talk. Savor the little moments. Get over addictions, they're selfish.
-When hubs walks in door from work, drop everything and hug and kiss! (I do this already, but I like that her hubs says, "Honey, I'm home!" I suggested to Scott that he start doing that, just in case I ever don't hear him come in...he's started :))
-Expand the way you connect with your spouse: intellectually, athletically, spiritually, aritciscally, academically, shared purpose (house projects etc)
-Increase the emotional bank account...5:1 positive to negative (comes from John Gottman; marriage researcher)
-Marriage killers: criticism, contempt, defensiveness, stonewalling
- ask yourself, "do I want to be right, or do I want to be married?"
-read Stephen Coveys, Marriage and Family: gospel insights
-ALWAYS go to bed together. Kneel adn pray together each night.
-marriage is like a testimony, or like going up the escalator the wrong way...as soon as you stop, it begins to go back/down. It is continual work
-Be an amabassador for marriage

Personal Improvement  (notes from Lynn Wilson and doctor Matt Morgan, Robert Millet and Randal Wright)
-You are as close to God as you choose to be (Moroni 7:48)
-What did you pray for yesterday? If the Lord grants your eternal station by what you prayed for yesterday, would you pray differently?
-During personal prayer, think of three specific things each day I'm grateful for. Also, ask what I can do to serve others and how I can show up as my best self, with my best attitude, especially in family relationships
-measure your progress based on the distance you've travelled
-God and Christ are in the business of people.
-Beware not to get caught up in the thick of thin things
-Turn off all noticfications except from people. At night (an hour or 2 before bed time), change phone to airplane mode and don't turn that off in the morning until you're ready (after read scriptures, pray, exercise etc)
-"If we encounter a man with rare intellect, I ask what books they're reading." -Ralph Waldo Emerson
-Lynda.com log in with library. Learn to do anything (photography videos etc). Edx, udacity, coursera, the great courses plus (this is also on dvd's at library)
-Podcasts: ted talks, dave ramsey, hardcore history, byu speeches, wow in the world (learning for kids)
Take notes at church
-"you never change your life until you step outside your comfort zone." Roy T Bennett
-Lord pushes us out of our comfort zone...1 Nephi 4:10 (I shrunk)
-Running coach to laura Toscani, "we didn't recruit you to be comfortable. Get uncomfortable."

Health: This class was taught by an MD, radiologist
-You can't outrun a bad diet.
-Food is fuel. A calorie is not a calorie
-Minimize sugar intake; and know that white flour is like sugar in the body. Sugar calories promote fat storage.
-Intermintent fasting is good. Try not to snack, just three meals. Give your body a rest in between.
-Reduce carbs
-Eat whole foods.
-Reduce frequency
-When exercising, it's okay to feel uncomfortable, probably good. We should feel pain and resistance...opposition in all things (2 Nephi 2:10). Our bones weaken and disintegrate and our muscles atrophy if not used and worked.
-Be physically fit, spiritually fed and emotionally stable

Finances:
-budget every Sunday, even if for 10 minutes. Review Mint.com or wherever you keep track
-learn to live on less. Reduce your need.
-read personal finance for dummies, Millionaire next door, and The Bogleheads guide to investing
-10% tithing and at least 10% to yourself in savings (better to do 15-20%)

Church History and Joseph Smith:
-"I know Jospeh Smith didn't write the Book of Mormon, no one in teh year 1830 could have because they didnt' have enough knowledge of Ancient Israel." Hugh Nibley
-Joseph Smith proclaimed ancient sea travel was possible long before anyone else thought it was possible.
-1 Nephi 1:1 born of goodly parents...goodly meaning 'wealthy', or many goods (robert millet). and then he explains that he was taught somewhat in all the learning of his father, which is common in the Jewish world. (he's letting you know why he can read and write because most didn't at that time; just like when a speaker is introduced they state they have a phd or masters or whatever).

Teaching:
-Paint a vision for your students of what they can become
-Tell stories, ask questions
-Picture the learner; what can they do to show me (and them) they've mastered it?
-Give feedback. Provide affirmation, clarification and guidance on using resources
-arrive early and greet them. Know their names.

A couple of my favorite lunches while at BYU ed week: Jamba Juice Bowls

Nutty almond butter bowl
Peachy Green Goodness Bowl
Not sure who snapped this photo, but here we are, after coming home one night from BYU ed week, putting dishes away and tidying up the kitchen; I love this, husband and wife working together and little Jane near by helping dry dishes from the dish rack. And what you can't see are Elisabeth and Charles, our oldest, clearing the table and counter. Famiy and home life is the labrotary of love.

Jody Moore Podcast, J Braces, back to school, C braces off

Our realtor (from two years ago), throws an annual party for his clients and this year the weather was just right, not too hot, so we took the kids over where they ate tacos, got their faces painted, ate Churros, and entered into a raffle...Elisabeth won a $10 gift card to Chick Fil A! Jason knows how to throw a great party!

For the past several months, our garage fridge has had a huge ice build up in the freezer and then that started leaking down in the fridge. All our food in the fridge is always wet, shelves are wet and the fruit and veggie drawers each had an inch or more of water in the bottom. Scott and I were both confused, didn't know what to do, maybe it was just broken. I love listening to audio books and podcasts when I'm exercising and cleaning and as I was listening to Jody Moore's podcast (she's life coach), she often says that confusion is a lie and that we can find the answers to just about anything on google and YouTube, so we shouldn't "fail ahead of time" by telling our brains the story that 'I'm confused', or "I can't do things like that." Rather say, 'I haven't learned how...yet! So I went ahead and took Jody's advice and while Scott was at work I did a google search and read an article on something similar (after google asked me something like, "did you mean this?" when I started my search, and sure enough, I did! They just knew a better question to ask.) and then looked it up on youtube and watched a video of a professional fixing the same problem. Then I grabbed a couple of tools and went to work. And within a couple of hours the fridge/freezer was totally fixed!!!!
Thanks Jody Moore for believing in me  even though we've never met!
We purchased a couple more pickle ball paddles and took the kids to the pickle balls courts down the street and played a few games. They all loved it so we'll definitely take them back again. Scott and I like to go sometimes on date nights, but it'll be nice to include the older kids more who can actually play pretty well.

Charles has started football again and so he is busy with that every evening and Saturdays. During the end of summer he played Monday-Friday, 2 1/2 hours each night. Now that school's starting this week, they're cutting back to 3 nights a week of 2 hour practices and then of course their two hour games on Saturday. He loves it, which is good because it's a big time commitment!
The bump on Charles' head is a mole, as we suspected, and the pediatric dermatologist froze it while we were in for a visit. And it looks like that one dose is going to take care of it! Football helped because wearing his helmet kinda helped pull off the remainder once it started dying.
A couple of weeks before school started Jane got spacers, then a week before school she got an expander and bottom braces. I'm grateful we decided to get this in over the summer because the first few days after the braces and expander made it difficult to eat anything, and she mostly drank smoothies. But she's adjusted now and doing well.

The girls did one more bake sale this summer, though only earning about half what they made last time, and this one was more work as we made sugar cookies with frosting which was more work and it seemed hotter. But it paid for one more excursion before school began....which was a trip to the movie theater on $5 Tuesday. E and A saw Ant Man and the rest of us watched Christopher Robin.

Documenting my scraped up knees....I took a fall on a long run. Kim J and I were running down a road that was under construction, it had a lot of loose gravel and I slipped. Whoops! Luckily I only had 2 miles left out of the 12 so I could get cleaned up quickly thereafter.
Scott served an LDS mission in Rome from 2000-2002. His amazing mission president and wife still hold annual mission reunions, in their home, which we attended this past weekend. They are so welcoming and gracious and we love them and are grateful for the Christlike examples.
Just look at all those missionaries listening intently as he speaks. Such love! And we're excited for them and their new adventures as they have been called to serve as temple president and matron in the soon to be opened Rome Italy temple!
My kids enjoyed their fun house, all the games and all the kids present, plus they have an outdoor pizza oven and we all loved having pizzas.
Nora lost her first tooth while at church on Sunday! It happened during singing time, while I was teaching 40 or so children a song, and she came up to tme in the middle of all my entertaining and smiled a huge and bloody smile. I congratuated her adn then sent her off to the bathroom to cleanup. It was kinda hilarious! Many of her friends lost their first tooth during kindergarten so she was highly anticipating this milestone!
"Sisters! Sisters! Their were never such devoted sisters!" Love that song and the movie White Christmas.

Just singing along to Elisabeth playing some songs from Frozen.

Mark and Stacey were so sweet and gave us a Chick Fil A gift card after Kira's wedding because we'd run the rootbeer float station and helped with clean up. We don't often take the kids out to eat so this was a treat! Also, the older kids have been going to McDonald's almost weekly this summer with Grandma Sugar (not really our grandma, but that's what they call her) after she takes them to do baptisms at the temple. They'll miss that now that they're back to school.

There wasn't enough ice cream for everyone, so while the younger girls were playing house, these two pulled out the carton and polished it off in an indiscreet location in the kitchen.
Monday August 20th, 2018...first day of American Preparatory Academy for these three!

And on that same morning, Charles got his braces off!!!
 We love this handsome guy!
Here's what that wart looks like now...I think it's all gone but time will tell for sure.
Charles started school Tuesday the 21st and Elisabeth Wednesday the 22nd. Love these middle schoolers!!!

End of July: 15 yr anniversary, bake sale for airborne

July is Charles date month (and January), and he wanted to get lunch at Cafe Rio. Which I am always happy to do.
Katherine had a baby shower at her mom's house for her new adopted baby Daisy. It was beautiful and it was so fun getting to see our old friend's the Denning's from Bothell.

Charles has this bump on his head...we first noticed it a couple of months ago and thought it was a mole. But I recently looked much closer, with a light, and I'm not so sure it's a mole. It looks more like a wart.
So after talking to Fred(my brother who is a PA) and sending him lots of pictures etc, he thinks we should have a dermatologist look at it before we decide to try to treat it like a wart, so we're going to take him in to the same doctor that removed Nora's cyst. She's a pediatric doctor with a skin specialty. He goes in next week.
Jane got some new light up shoes that have skates on the bottom. She's been wanting these for awhile, and she paid for part and had a reward coming her way because of a singing solo she did, so we got the shoes.
July 25th was our 15 year anniversary. On the 25th we did sealings at the temple, as per tradition and one we love, and then we had dinner at an Indian restaurant. But March this year was our first ever trip away (for more than a night or 2) from the kids, and it was partly in honor of our 15 year anniversary which was coming up.
And we sure LOVED our time in Europe! At the end of this post you'll find 15 favorite memories with Scott in honor of our 15 year anniversary.

Now that all of our vacations, camps and family reunions are over, the kids have a lot more time at home. The mornings are full of chores, piano, reading, school work etc, but then the afternoons come and they often don't have friends around that can play because they're on trips etc, and we go to the pool 2-3 times a week but there's still a lot of time and it's too hot to be outside if you're not in the pool. So they've been watching some Netflix, which we had a free trial for during the month of July, and then we've been coming up with other inexpensive outings. We had several buy 1 get 1 free coupons for Culvers so we went there one day and the girls all got shakes and Charles and dad got a meal.

Another day the kids spent a couple of hours baking and we made giant cookies which they sold on the street the following day, in hopes of making enough to go to Airborne, which was going to be $40 when we used a coupon, and they made $37! So I covered the remainder and we went to Airborne. Thank you to our awesome neighbors for their support!

They loved every second of the hours time they got to play.

These three little girls love Acai bowls and we've been eating them almost daily for a late afternoon snack! Yum! We put an acai packet, almond milk, 1/2 an avocado, chia seeds and frozen blueberries in our blender, blend it up and then pour it over granola and top it with strawberries (and I add bananas and unsweetened coconut flakes to mine).
1) Just before we started dating we drove from Utah to WA and had lots of time to talk and get to know one another…. and we tried to memorize the lyrics to a really fast country song which was hilarious!
2)  Our wedding in WA DC temple and our honeymoon in South Carolina beach where I was stung by a sting ray, and then onto Europe. Lots of “firsts” together, during this time.
3) Life in our first apartment. It was a Studio apartment, 300 square feet total. The entire apartment is about the same size as our current master bed and bath. So small so we were very close whenever we were home :). But we made it work for that year and I loved that we were both willing to live in a place like that; builds character. And moving from there to our next 2 bedroom, 650 sq ft apartment felt like we’d upgraded to a mansion!
4) Going to BYU together. Walking each other to classes, and our on campus jobs. We even took a couple of classes together including a marriage class.  During our last year at BYU we’d trade off watching baby Elisabeth while the other was in class, and we graduated together in December 2005.
5) Visiting and doing homework together at the laundry mat. We were regulars our first two years of marriage. I can remember the day when we moved into an apartment(our 4th move) with a washer and dryer. Heaven on earth! I felt like a queen :)!
6)  Singing together in church choir or at home, while scott played the guitar or later with Elisabeth on the piano. We both love music.
7) The births of each one of our 5 children. It was always just him and me and we held hands through the pain (he claims to have felt the pain through my very tight grip), and once I’d had my epidural, we’d visit and laugh and sleep until the arrival.
8) Weekly date nights. We’ve done this forever, though when we had all young kids, we did more in-home date nights where we’d put kids to bed then get take-out or watch a movie together and snuggle on the couch :). Now that they’re older we go out, most often to the temple or to dinner and when it’s nice out we like to do hikes, walks, pickleball and bike rides
9) Trips: mostly we’ve done a handful of one-nighters over the past 15 years because we started our family immediately and it never felt like a good time to be away for long. But they’re older now and this year(early 15 year anniversary gift) we made a trip back to Europe with just the two of us and it was wonderful to travel together by plane, train, metro and foot and to hike, bike and experience all sorts of fun new foods and cultures. Salzburg was dreamy.
10) Evening walks in the summer and the occasional morning runs and our Bryce Canyon half marathon which we ran and finished together.
11) Saturday’s and Sunday’s, Because we’re together. Working together, playing together, laughing together, we often follow each other around. On the weekends, once a month, I also cut his hair and I love this time together and I love that he wants ME to do it. Although it comes easy now, In the beginning it didn’t always look very good but he was always encouraging and kind.
12) Aspen grove marriage retreat in Provo canyon. Cabin sleeping, hiking, seminars with hank smith, running up and down the mountain together in the freezing cold.
13) Nightly pillow talk time. Each night after we put the kids to bed, we go to bed together. We pray together, read scriptures together(while the one not reading is scratching/massaging the readers back) and then we visit, sometimes a few minutes if we’re super sleepy, and sometimes 20 minutes. This is our time to connect without any other distractions or interruptions and I love it.
14) Lunch time phone calls. Scott’s usually the one to call me because his work schedule is a little more strict than mine with his meetings etc. I love connecting with him mid day, hearing his voice, knowing he’s thinking of me. This also goes for the random text messages we’ll send each other throughout the day, sometimes business, but often times just sweet words or fun “love” emojis :).
15)Our Yearly anniversary date night where we do sealings at the temple and then have dinner. Love this & I’m excited to do it again tonight! Love remembering the promises we made to each other and to the Lord all those years ago, made even more meaningful on our anniversary day. And we all know how much  I love food! We’ll be having Indian tonight which is a food we both fell in love with several years ago.
