Macaroni and bread sticks

Here are a couple of recipes we love. The macaroni and cheese recipe was one I found in my Deceptively Delicious book. The garlic bread recipe was one I made combining different recipes and making my own healthier modifications.

Macaroni and Cheese- Deceptively Delicious

2 c elbow macaroni

1 Tbsp olive oil

1 tbsp flour

½ c milk

½ c butternut squash or cauliflower puree

1 ½ c shredded cheddar cheese (about 8 oz)

4 oz (almost ¼ c) reduced fat or nonfat cream cheese

½ tsp salt

1/8 tsp paprika

1/8 tsp pepper

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil, add the macaroni, and cook according to package directions until al dente. Drain in a colander.

While the macaroni is cooking, coat a large saucepan with cooking spray and heat over medium heat. Add the oil, then the flour, and cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture resembles a thick paste but has not browned, 1-2 minutes.

Add the milk and cook, stirring every now and then, until the mixture begins to thicken, 3-4 minutes. Add the vegetable puree, cheddar, cream cheese and seasonings and stir until the cheese is melted and the sauce is smooth. Stir in the macaroni and serve warm.

Bread Sticks- Makes 18 bread sticks


  • 1 1/3 cups warm water

  • 3 tablespoons butter, softened

  • 3 c white flour

  • 1 c wheat flour
  • 2 teaspoons salt

  • 1/4 cup white sugar (you can make it without sugar)

  • 1/4 cup sesame seeds

  • 2 tablespoons dry milk powder

  • 2 1/2 teaspoons active dry yeast

  • garlic powder (about 2 tsp sprinkled)

  • garlic powder and parsley flake mix


  1. Preheat oven to 300 degrees. Mix yeast and sugar in water in a liquid measuring cup. Cover and let stand 5 minutes. While waiting, combine dry ingredients into a large mixing bowl. Add the water mix. Combine and knead for 5 minutes. Turn off oven. Put dough in a glass dish and place in warmed oven. Let stand 20-30 minutes.

  2. Spray two baking sheets with cooking spray or line with parchment sheets.

  3. Remove dough to a lightly oiled surface. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Divide dough up into 18 pieces. Roll each piece on an oiled board, from center of piece to the outside edges to form bread sticks. Place bread sticks at least 1 inch apart on the prepared pans.

  4. Brush bread sticks with butter and sprinkle with garlic powder and parsley flakes.

  5. Bake in preheated oven for 10 to 15 minutes, until golden. Remove to a wire rack to cool.

Thanks for sharing another great recipe, we actually have that book, but I had forgotten about it. Can't wait to try it!
